As we all continue to navigate our way through the Covid-19 environment, this innovative digital summit for young people, by young people across the Geelong region will look at ways of breaking down the barriers that cause loneliness, social isolation and lack of connectedness.

The direction and outcomes of the “Local and Vocal” summit will be largely determined by young people, for young people.

To be held on 28 October 2020, the Local and Vocal summit will include expert speakers, break-out discussions and the opportunity to pitch creative ideas to be implemented within the Geelong regional community.

The summit will be facilitated by Upstart’s Founders Jenny Perks and Heather Kelly. Speakers include VicHealth’s Manager, Mental Wellbeing Irene Verins, Headspace CEO Jason Trethowan, G21 Health & Wellbeing Director Zoe Barnett. This year’s co-MC of the Regional Youth Voice Summit is Jaegar Fawcett – one half of the winning team in the 2019 Geelong Upstart Challenge!

Upstart’s Jenny Perks, said: “It’s fantastic to see Upstart Alumni using their voice and entrepreneurial spirit to positively impact and support their local community. The Regional Youth Voice program is a brilliant initiative that we’re proud to be part of.”

Summit spokesperson Tyson, 17 years-of-age from the Surf Coast, said the event was expected to be well attended.

“Several hundred young people are expected to take part in the summit. The recent COVID restrictions have added to an already difficult set of challenging barriers facing young people today,” Tyson said.

“The summit will not only give young people a chance to inject their own ideas into breaking down barriers to social connection, it will be a socialising opportunity in itself. We expect new connections to be forged through the summit.

Event Details
• Wednesday 28 October, between 10am – 2pm.
• The summit will be hosted online via Zoom.
